| The town of greenery and flowers, town of poets and artists – is situated in the North-Western part of the bay with the same name. The town was founded by the Bosnian king Tvrtko I in 1382. It was further built and extended by Herzog Stjepan Vukcic-Kosaca, after whom the town got its name. Since 1483, the town was under the Turkish rule until 1687 when the Turks were defeated in fight with Venetians and Montenegrins and had to leave the town. The town centre consists of the Old City, from which the today's Herceg Novi developed. We should mention in particular from the monumental fortress architecture: the Clock Tower from 1667, the fortress Forte-mare on the shore itself from 1687 (adapted in the summer cinema), Kanli Tower, fortress from 1483 (adapted for summer stage), fortress Spanjola, which dominates the town, and whose foundations were laid in 1538 by Spaniards, and which was later additionally built by Turks. |
